Welcome to the Green Gate Village Historic Inn, one of Utah's  "hidden  treasures".  Behind our green gates you'll discover 14 buildings with nine beautifully restored homes  nestled in a garden-like setting around our "Village Green".  Each home has one or more private rooms or suites providing modern comfort and privacy in early Victorian or upscale pioneer refinement.  All rooms and suites have their own private baths. Many suites are in homes, bungalows or cottages set off by themselves to provide additional privacy for our guests.

 

 

 
The “Village” is actually several historic properties blended together to form our own little private community in the heart of downtown St. George. Whether your personal favorite is the Orson Pratt House, the Bentley House, the Green Hedge Manor or one of the other delightful residences, you’re sure to find one or several that perfectly suits the requirements of your next stay. Or visit us often and try them all. After you've selected your suite and experienced a restful sleep, join us each morning for a traditional hot breakfast served on formal white linen in our beautifully-appointed Garden Room. Then, top off your morning with a delicious cup of coffee, hot chocolate or Brigham tea and engage in friendly conversation with fellow travelers from the far corners of the world.  As always, those travelers wishing to dine alone may do so by reserving the Bentley House Parlor or by scheduling "Breakfast In Bed" at a nominal additional charge.

 
During your visit with us, enjoy a delicate balance of Old World charm and elegance combined with New World conveniences. The Carriage House (where local gentry once housed their carriages) is now a Reception Center and the Gazebo Courtyard & Village Green have been venues for local receptions and other important social events since lava became  dirt.   There is also the  Bentley House Restaurant (now a favorite for family-style meals for groups of 35 or more) and, of course,  Judd's General Store (known by every cowboy, rancher, farmer, merchant, homemaker, road-weary traveler and wide-eyed school child in Utah's Color Country since the mid-1890's).

 

 

 

What's the history behind our name "Green Gate" Village?  In 1877, Brigham Young  ordered white paint for the new St. George Temple. When the shipment finally arrived by wagon he was disappointed to learn that the paint was green, not white.  Unable to return it, he gave the green paint to local St. George residents to gild their gates and fences. Only one of those green gates still remain from a 131 years ago and is on display in our formal garden.  The other gates surrounding the Village are patterned after this treasured original. Things To Do:

St. George, Utah is the perfect gateway to both the natural and man-made beauties of Southern Utah's Color Country.  For sightseeing, hiking, biking, ATV'ing, rock climbing, rappelling, etc., there are few places on earth that can compare.  The closest "Oh wow!" can be found at Snow Canyon State Park  less than ten miles north on state highway 18.  A few miles further west is Gunlock State Park.  The same distance east of St. George is Quail Creek State Park and its only 30 minutes further to Coral Pink Sand Dunes.  By far the areas biggest attraction is the incredibly beautiful Zion National Park only a 45 minute drive east of St. George.  Cedar Breaks and Bryce Canyon are only a few miles further north.  If you've seen the Grand Canyon from the south rim and thought it was magnificent - just wait until you see it from high in the pine trees of the north rim, just 2 hours and 10 minutes from St. George.  There is no comparison.  

If you like golf, there are twelve local courses and more on the drawing boards.  Enjoy the outdoors year 'round and test your golfing skills at scenic courses such as: Entrada, Sunbrook, Dixie Redhills, Bloomington Country Club, Coral Canyon, Green Springs, Southgate, Sky Mountain, Sun River and others.  All of these course are within an easy 10-12 minute drive from the Green Gate Village Historic Inn.  The City of St. George sponsors the popular Red Rock Golf Tour.  And, if you still can't get enough golf, there are another handful of courses just thirty minutes away in Mesquite.  Call us for assistance with your "Tee" times.

Some of the more popular annual events are:  The Rotary Club Rodeo and Rotary Bowl, Spring Art Festival, St. George Marathon and World Senior Games.  Rooms at the Green Gate Village Inn are usually booked a year in advance for these and other events such as golf, soccer, basketball and softball tourneys, Parade of Homes and Homecoming (Dixie State College).   Don't be disappointed.  Book your room now.  Why stay anywhere else if there's room at the inn?

And what would the Historic District be without historic sites.  Starting with your home base at the Green Gate Village Historic Inn you will see beautifully restored and upgraded homes dating from the 1860's.  Two of our homes are on the National Register of Historic Places, three are protected by the Utah Heritage Foundation and three have been designated Historic Landmarks by the City of St. George.  (One of these Historic Landmarks is Judd's General Store, a "must see" if, for no other reason than the fact that they stock over 100 varieties of classic, glass-bottled soft drinks available no where else in the state.)  Many visitors enjoy the Walking Tour around the Historic District.  Most sites of interest are clearly marked with brass plaques. Across the street is the LDS Tabernacle.  Two blocks away you'll find Brigham Young's summer home, the court house and pioneer museum.  Five blocks away is the stately St. George Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (The Mormons).  (St. George is one of hundreds of towns founded by Mormon settlers during the mid-to-late 1800's.  It was settled when 309 families were "called" on a "cotton mission" to raise cotton, sheep, silk, etc., necessary in the manufacture of textiles which were in short supply due to the Civil War.  The name "Utah's Dixie" has stuck ever since.)  During the summer months "St. George Live" conducts tours around the Historic District in small buses starting twice a day from the Opera House.  And, talk about "history", how about the "most significant dinosaur track site in western North America"?  See foot prints left by these early Jurassic giants 200 million years ago just five minutes east of the city at St. George Dinosaur Discovery Site at Johnson's Farm.

For a little cultural entertainment you should definitely consider the St. George Musical Theater, a delightful theater-in-the-round.  We'd be happy to make reservations in your name.  Also, the Tuacahn Amphitheatre offers world-class productions in a most spectacular outdoor setting.  Folks travel hundreds of miles to attend one of these shows.  There are also theaters near Zion National Park (Tanner Amphitheater and Bumbleberry Theater) as well as an IMAX theater (Zion Canyon Cinemax) offering a variety of specialty productions.  Just around the corner from the "Village" there is weekly free entertainment on Main Street at "St. George Downtown" from 6-10pm every Thursday night.  And, the Tabernacle usually hosts one or two recitals or concerts each week (Wednesday and Saturday), also at no charge.  And nearby Dixie College hosts the Celebrity Concert Series.  Going north on I-15? Cedar City fills up during the summer so why not consider making the "Village" your home away from home while attending their annual Shakespearean Festival as well?  Another possibility would be the Dixie College Elderhostel.  They usually have a well-organized full agenda for like-minded travelers.  

Doing Business In St. George:

St. George is also the county seat for Washington County.  With over 1,000 new residents per month, the county accounts for over 50% of Utah's net growth, and Utah's growth is 5th in the nation.  The county population now exceeds 125,000.   The Green Gate Village Historic Inn is within easy walking distance of most city, county and federal government offices.  The Washington County Economic Development Council is a strong partner for current and future growth in the area.  Did you know that we have a "national airline" headquartered in St. George?  (To be designated a national airline by the FAA you must have at least one billion dollars in annual sales.)  That status was recently achieved by Skywest Airlines.  You probably know them better as Delta Connection or United Express, two of their major contracts.  They also just purchased Atlantic Southeast Airlines making them the largest "regional carrier" in the nation.  Skywest is one of the America's best success stories and a major employer in St. George.  Other major employers include:  Wal-Mart, Washington County School District, Dixie Regional Medical Center (Intermountain Health), Dixie State College, City of St. George, Andrus Trucking, Lin's Thriftway, Sunroc Corporation and The Spectrum.  The 1,000 acre Fort Pierce Industrial and Business Park is the latest commercial addition to the region with such new tenants as Orgill, Inc., Well's Dairy's Blue Bunny Ice Cream and Bomatic Plastics.  Other established areas include the Tonaquint Center High Tech Business Park, the Gateway Industrial Park including the Wal-Mart Distribution Center, Pace American Cargo Trailers and Mikohn Worldwide.  Within the next five years the St. George Municipal Airport will be replaced by a new regional airport allowing for much needed expansion in passenger and freight traffic.  The Dixie Convention Center, the city/county convention center, is located at the south entrance to town just off I-15.  Of course, some folks consider shopping as "doing business".  While there are two Wal-Marts, a K-Mart, a Costco and a Target in town, you may also want to consider the Zion Factory Outlet Mall and the Red Cliffs Mall which includes Dillard's, JCPenney and Sears.  In addition, the downtown area has many unique shops and restaurants within easy walking distance of the Green Gate Village Historic Inn.

There are several local and chain restaurants conveniently located near the Village.  However, the favorite with our guests is still the award-winning Painted Pony (2006 "finest restaurant in Southern Utah") located in the heart of Ancestor Square, an easy 1 1/2 block walk from your suite.  Reservations are recommended.
